this morning fairfield fire investigators will begin trying to determine how a popular comedy club went up in flames last night. sky 7hd was overhead as up to 100 firefighters battled the flames which broke out around 7:00. there were a few employees and customers inside at the time but police managed to get everyone out quickly. the heavy smoke inside the building forced firefighters to call for help from throughout solano county. by 11:00 the fire was knocked down. one fire company did stay on scene overnight to make sure there were no flareups. >> we have nothing as far as anything being suspicious about how the fire started. it is a protocol because it is a five-alarm fire. >> no injuries were reported and no other buildings were damaged by the fire. an oakland police officer is recovering this morning after being shot in the leg. he is the second officer wounded in the line of duty this week. last night's shooting appeared in the fruitvale district.

on monday an undercover officer was shot the arm about a mile away. abc7 news reporter allen wong reports. >> reporter: place say this camaro ran a stop sign and got broadside bid this chefly impala at east 12th street and 37th avenue. witnesses say the driver of the camaro didn't have any id and he was behaving erratically. they said he tried and failed to open the door after passing car and then left the scene on foot. during the course of that investigation the officer heard several gunshots several blocks away. the police chief howard jordan tells us two officers left the crash scene and headed toward the gunshots. they were confronted by a gunman who shot one officer in the leg and then ran away. the police caught up with him two blocks away. >> at that time one officer fired his weapon at the suspect. they did not hit him. the suspect immediately surrendered, dropped the gun and was taken into custody. >> the witness said the initial

gunfire happened when a man matching the description of the hit-and-run driver shot at him and wanted to take his fight. >> to have the audacity to to shoot at an officer tells you the level of violence we are dealing with. we will do everything in our power to put an end to this. >> the police chief said he's determined to end the wave of violence by sending a clear message. he plans on working with the d. a. to make sure these criminals get the maximum sentence possibility. allen wong, abc7 news. keeping guns out of the hands of criminals is the focus of national debate and local action. today the san mateo sheriff's office will do what other jurisdictions have already done and offer cash to people who turn in their guns. today's gun buy back take place in san mateo at the event center from 10:00 this morning until 2:00 in the afternoon. meanwhile vice president joe biden are looking for ways to

keep criminals from mentally ill from buying guns. they are talking about better enforcement of existing gun laws by allowing states to access a national database. >> a gun dealer or dick's sporting goods to buy a weapon, you essentially swipe your card, they swipe it for you and find out whether you are in a prohibit class of people. >> vice president biden is taking the white house gun control policy on the road to get consensus from states where guns and hunting are popular. the marin county district attorney's office has announced it will make good on the gun buy back vouchers tharpe handed out earlier this month. the buy back event overwhelmed officials. more than 800 guns were turned in and $48,000 in donations went quickly, $67,000 worth of vouchers had to be handed out. the voucher redemption will

to engage in hazing and bullying acts of all kinds. >> as varsity head coach i'm being held accountable for the action of the varsity players against the jv kids but no one is holding accountable the jv coach for protecting the jv kids from this happening. >> a school spokesman said principal mary ellen ryan dismissed him because he was responsible for supervising the students at the time the hazing took place. six students were interviewed as victims and their parents were void. police were also notified but no arrests were made. >> covering news, doctors are treating a blood clot they say could have killed brian stow. he's the giants fan who suffered brain dam after he was beaten at dodger stadium nearly two years ago. he's receiving treatment to dissolve the clot. doctors are surprised the clotted was not tattle because

lisa argen keeping an eye on the weather. what is going on this weekend? >> yesterday you notice how mild it was. >> it was great. >> 65 in half moon bay. >> i was wearing flip-flops in san francisco. >> felt kind of tropical. it was humid and that was from the flow out of the south. today it changes due to an incoming system to the north of us. as we head outside icing foggy along the golden gate bridge but not as foggy around livermore. i will show you those visibilities in a moment. sunrise 7:14. influence the last couple days has been from the south. we had the rain in the east bay and also in the south bay. now this morning we are dry. live doppler 7hd shows that we are look at camera on top of mount saint helena. the system to the north of us will allow for cooler care and gusty northwest winds later on. but right now it's nice out with

52 in san francisco. 51 in oakland. 51 san jose. numbers in our east bay valleys still quite mild in the upper 40s with 45 santa rosa and down by the monterey bay still mild. holding on to a lost that warmth from the overnight hours. a little fog out there. take a look at the visibility in the inland valleys. we are looking at more dense fog with a quarter mile livermore, as well as napa, santa rosa and just a mile along the coast. so heading out be careful. there is that fog and the reduced visibility from time to time. but overall numbers in general are warmer in some spots, cooler elsewhere. but it is a pretty nice morning out there because the trade off in the days ahead will be much cooler temperatures overnight into the early morning hours. so areas of fog turning cooler today with numbers below the average and a cool, dry pattern into next week. we around talking about any incoming weather system. so that snowpack is slipping. we are down to 99% of normal. started out the month with 136%

of normal in the sierra snowpack. here's the cold front. it's the leading edge of cooler arrowheaded our way throughout the weekend but it will also provide a slight chance of a shower. cooler air comes on in the next couple days and that will allow for the numbers to really take a tumble. had some pretty good rain yesterday in southern california from san diego into los angeles. that continues with a chance of it anyway. low 60s in southern california. 69 big sir as well as sacramento. elsewhere around the bay, numbers much cooler. no more 60s. 56 downtown as well as san mateo with a couple upper 50s. we will call it partly cloudy skies, a slight chance after shower not only today, it will take us through tonight and tomorrow. the atmosphere a little unstable. the influence now more out of the north. that's why we are getting the cooler air mass, the slight chance of a shower interacting with some of that moisture in place from the south.

six pm. meter readers have handed out 1100 warnings since then. but not anymore. if your meter is expired you will get a ticket. seventy-two dollars downtown, $62 everiy else. officials insist it's not about money but to help parking turnover. >> officials are bringing back a one-year-old program to help businesses in chinatown during the lunar new year holiday. starting today san francisco will prohibit curbside park along five blocks so businesses can set up outdoor displays during the lucrative week leading up to the new year lunar celebration. the goal is to ensure the safety of large crowds of shoppers that are expected. merchants will have to get a special permit to set up subside displays. mashing is off-limits between nine in the morning and seven at night. about four weeks into january and 'tis the season for

>> the fancy footwork gained her a spot on the school soccer team. she also plays for a club. so we were surprised when she showed us her prosthetic leg. >> this is actually the liner and inside here it's just hollow. >> her school, willard middle school in berkeley, encourages all students, including those with disabilities, to try out for any sports. >> they just treat me like a regular kid. there's nothing really different about me except for my leg and i can just deal with that. >> and in some cases the school makes the proper accommodations. >> a child who is hearing impaired, we may need visual cues with the buzzer or gun or if there's something else for a child that needs something that's correct needs to be put in place. >> willard is already doing what a lot of the u.s. department of education will require all schools to do. if a student with a disability cannot meet the standards of

skill or ability of that team, they must provide another option like creating another team n november willard received an award from an organization promoting equality for people with disabilities. >> they say this will do for students with disabilities what title 9 did for women. >> a san francisco based organization. they have year-round abc news tests for kids. >> just because you have a disability doesn't mean that you can't compete. it doesn't mean that you can't be part of a team. >> peter coaches the san francisco's little league baseball challenger division for kids with disabilities. >> a lot of kids with disact have low muscle tone so finding physical impression is particularly important for them. >> but school districts of that seen tremendous cuts inside and outside the classroom worry about what it will take to comply. lyanne melendez, abc7 news.

>> welcome back. it's 5:47. lisa has the forecast. i could go for more of yesterday. >> i know. >> in luck? >> no. break to you gently. it was really mild in the mid-60ss. felt kind of tropical out there. already looking at some fog today. here's a look from the emeryville camma. we are talking about not only fog in the east bay valleys but also in the north bay and in on the coast. so things definitely around the bay will not be like what we had the last several days. we had the subtropical air mass from the south, even bringing up some moisture. but as we check out live doppler 7hd right now there is nothing on our radar. but that could change. we are looking at a system coming in from the north throughout the day today and providing a chance of showers throughout the entire weekend. although it's just a slight chance and we do favor the north bay. coolest numbers in the north bay, 43 napa. good morning redwood city. it's 48 for you. 51 in the south bay.

also in oakland. 52 in san francisco and half moon bay. in the monterey bay mild with 50 watsonville, 53 salinas. fog extends from the north bay from napa and santa rosa to the livermore volley. it's pretty good in the south bay and also around oakland and concord this morning, but that could change. area of fog, turning cooler today, compliments after system from the north with a slight chance of a shower. after the weekend we are talking about a cool, dry pattern through the entire upcoming work week. we are looking at the snowpack continuing to decrease and percentage of normal probably getting down to about 100 percent. we are well before that, of course, for the anything of the month. here's the satellite and radar composite. you notice all the moisture that was with us yesterday in southern california continues to press on off to the south and east. we have another cold front. it's to the north though. this is allowing for not only a slight chance of a shower but the leading edge of much cooler

arrowheaded our way throughout the afternoon today and right on through tomorrow. it will bring temperatures back into the mid-and upper 50s. a brisk northwesterly winds around san francisco, the coast. it will be a cooler afternoon. snow level will continue to drop but not a lot of moisture. 48 in the southern sierra, 45 in the northern sierra with upper 40s in eureka. back home notice at much as 10 degrees cooler today. we were 65 yesterday at half moon bay. so we had that mild air from the south but today much dryer and breezy with the cool air mass providing that slight chance of showers throughout the day today. the evening tonight and into your sunday and highs still just struggling to make it into the upper 50s. so 59 in salinas, 57 watsonville and a look at the next seven days shows the partly cloudy

skies. a slight chance after shower. but more impressively the cooler air right through today and tomorrow. then for monday very little change. we will begin to edge the temperatures up in the upper 50s by tuesday. wednesday, thursday and fridays we are in the lower 60s. steady pattern with bright sunshine through the latter part of the upcoming work week. >> sounds all right for those of you who will be here in the bay area. >> i have to check on that new orleans forecast. >> thanks, lisa. you put something in the mail knowing there's a slight chance it could get lost. a bay area man said his package wasn't exactly lost, it got stuck in a world known as a postal loop. michael finney said that can be pretty frustrating. >> roger of san francisco likes taking pictures the old way works his boxy, east man cameras from the 1930s. the kind you peer into with a hood over your head. >> you have a lot of resolution and you can make very nice prints. >> however, roger didn't have

the right lens to take picture from a distance. so when a collector back east offered one for 65 bucks, roger snapped it up. >> that began a long process of. >> so why is roger laughing? it's all about what happened after the seller mailed the lens in massachusetts. >> basically it got stuck in the postal system and started going back and forth across the country. >> the trouble began when a postal clerk put the wrong coding on the mailing label. it said the package was going to boston. the handwritten address said it was going to san francisco, so you can imagine the state of confusion that resulted. >> so it got stuck in the loop. everything is ought makes these days. >> that's james wigdahl of the u.s. postal service. he said the package was trapped in an endless mailing loop. every time it came to san francisco, the post office

scanned the package and it went back to boston. roger watched it as it criss-crossed the country while he tracked it. it kept going in the same circle for nearly a month. >> i started to wonder how long is this going to go on? is it going to ever stop? >> roger contacted the postal service. he says no one know how to stop sending the box back to boston. >> he said just wait, if it doesn't come back and get delivered after five days give as you call back. >> it didn't get delivered and the post office told him to wait some more. instead he contacted seven on your side. >> one of the concerns was that this box was just going to be this tattered mess with the beat-up broken lens inside of it. >> we contacted the postal service and the folks there came up with a plan to rescue the box from that vicious cycle. >> they intercepted it and said we have the package, we are putting it on this flight.

as soon as it gets to san francisco, grab it. >> which they did. roger picked it up, opened the box and found the long-awaited traveling lens safely tucked inside. >> happy ending. we found the package and it got delivered. >> it was really exciting. i was very happy. >> there is no guarantee a mistake won't happen when you mail a package but the postal service said problems like this are extremely rare. the best route? send your box by priority mail or other service that comes with a tracking code. then that way, like roger, you can at least see where your package is going. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. >> coming up next, automobiles take flight. the new car that's making science fiction a
